On behalf of the municipality of Almere, development of a sustainable and future-proof waste collection system.
2022 - 2023
Inquiry
What constitutes a sustainable and future-proof waste collection system for the municipality of Almere?
In Almere, residual waste and organic waste were collected using a dual-container system. However, this did not lead to the desired reduction in residual waste, and the equipment was outdated. A better and more future-proof solution was needed. Various collection systems had been explored since 2016, but no decision or resident support had been generated. Our consultants established and executed a program for the development of a sustainable and future-proof waste collection system suitable for Almere.
Approach
Based on the plan we created, an investigation was conducted to assess the effects of different variants on sustainability performances, finances (waste management costs and waste levies), and resident support in Almere.

Outcome
Our efforts culminated in the council proposal ‘TAS’, which was approved after discussion in late 2022, opting for a comprehensive improvement package of services. The council chose to adopt post-separation of PMD, collecting PMD together with the residual waste in the same bin.
